Highlands Organ Society
Members of the Highlands Organ Society, in Sebring, Florida, are all organists-real organists who play all three keyboards to make beautiful music. Whether playing swinging big band sounds, spiritually soothing toccatas, or body swaying Latin sambas, we make music that affects others.
We meet twice a month at the home of our host, 90-year-old Frank Hutchins, who allows us all the privilege and pleasure of playing his Lowery Grand Royale console organ. Our mission is to enjoy the beautiful music we share and to help each other learn and play better.
Our core group is: Hutchins, Rick Jones, Don Frisbe, Ed Becan, and myself, Sharon Weatherhead. We range in age from 50-something to 90. Besides playing beautiful organ music for our own enjoyment, we occasionally offer themed concerts for the community. The music and camaraderie has changed, not only our lives, but also our families and community.
When I started with Highlands Organ Society two years ago, I had let my playing taper off. With the friends I have made and the energy they bring to the meetings, I enjoy playing so much that it's almost an obsession.
"Playing the organ and making beautiful music has made my life more enjoyable," says Hutchins. "It makes my life more livable and gives me great pleasure."
"I remember listening to songs of the '50s and '60s that I could only whistle. Now, I can play the music! It gives me a chance for musical expression," says Jones.
"I find it very enjoyable and relaxing," says Frisbe, a man of few words.
"Playing reduces my stress, keeps my diabetes under control, and keeps me from snacking," says Becan. "Oh, and of course, I enjoy playing. The Lowrey organ has reignited my passion to entertain and play. It feels like the warmth of a candle glow inside."
It's obvious to everyone we know that we love making music and sharing it with each other.
