Rocky Ridge Music Center

Music in the Mountains
by Cherie Yurco

Nestled in the heart of the Colorado's Rocky Mountains, the Rocky Ridge Music Center has a long tradition of offering quality musical seminars to students from around the world, in a serene and beautiful setting. The cool mountain climate is an easy escape from the distractions of everyday living, and in between playing and learning, musicians can take in the scenery or a walk in the woods.

One of the oldest summer music programs in the country, Rocky Ridge Music Center was founded in 1942 by pianist and teacher Beth Miller Harrod. She believed in learning in a community and was devoted to the idea of a student's journey of self-discovery. She felt that this journey could be engendered and fostered in an inspiring and protected environment and so she created that environment at the foot of Longs Peak in Colorado.

Today, the 17-acre camp provides a stunning backdrop for performances, practice, lessons, reflection, and friendship, offering summer music programs for students of various ages, including several adult seminars.

Summer 2010 Adult Programs

Adult Guitar Seminar, June 9-13:

Students join other classical guitarists to further their skills. They attend group lessons, ensemble coaching, and technique classes. The seminar culminates in student and faculty concerts.

Adult Piano Seminar, June 9-13:

Participants establish their own goals as they interact with other pianists from around the world. They have the opportunity for private lessons, many hours of uninterrupted practice, coaching on technique, master classes, and lecture-recitals by resident faculty, as well as guest artists.

Chamberre, August 18-22:

Chamberre in the Rockies provides a magical setting for the participants to play string chamber music, often in sessions pushing late into the night. Participants develop lasting friendships through five days of music. Many players have returned to this program for more than 20 years, from around the world.

Adult Chamber Music Seminar, August 24-28:

Rocky Ridge's newest program for adult chamber music enthusiasts is this five-day chamber music experience designed to be similar to Chamberre. It adds an element of coaching by professional chamber musicians, which varies in intensity according to the comfort level of each participant. Faculty also present open sessions designed to improve rehearsal techniques, listening skills, and explore chamber repertoire. Individuals, as well as ensembles, may apply. Ensembles can choose to perform in masterclass sessions and individuals may explore chamber works in a large group setting.

No auditions are required for the adult programs. For more information visit www.rockyridge.org.
