The Museum of Making Music

Popular music as it exists today is the result of several technical and manufacturing advancements made over the last century.

06septoctblankTo honor these innovations, a wealth of musical history is on hand at The Museum of Making Music, located in Carlsbad, California. Its mission is “to celebrate the rich history and encourage the future of music making.”

Exhibits tell the history of American popular music and chart the progression of instrument design and development. The museum is split into five interactive galleries, which contain more than 450 items, from vintage instruments and musical artifacts to a collection of hundreds of audio samples.

One of the museum’s most popular exhibits is “Hands on the Future,” which features more than a dozen of the latest high-tech interactive instruments.

It’s always worth checking in with the museum at its website—www.museumofmakingmusic.org—as special and visiting exhibits make their way to Carlsbad on a regular basis. The latest—Howe-Orme: Forgotten Voices Remembered—is the museum’s first-ever public exhibition of a collection of rare and historic Howe-Orme mandolins, mandolas, and guitars, some of which date from the 1890s and represent steps in the evolution of modern instruments.

The Museum of Making Music is located at 5790 Armada Drive, Carlsbad, California, 92008. Contact the museum at 760-438-5996. To learn more about the city of Carlsbad, located 35 miles north of San Diego, check out the city’s online Visitor’s Center at www.carlsbadca.org.
